State of the Planet's Cyrosphere

Internationally Acclaimed Greenland Climatologist In Telluride

Dr. Jason Box, a research climatologist from the Byrd Polar Research Center, continues to be in close contact with the Telluride Institute. After presenting specifically on the climatology and glacial mass balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet to a sold out house in Telluride this fall, Jason returned to Telluride in mid-January to give another stunning presentation.

This presentation, which was graciously hosted by the Telluride Mountain School, was much broader in scope. Entitled "The State of the Planet's Cryosphere," Jason gave a remarkable overview of the planet's snow and ice covered surfaces and how they are reacting to changes in climate. Unlike the packed house at the Sheridan, this more intimate group asked questions and engaged with Jason throughout the presentation. Jason's research is truly world-class, and we look forward to having him return to Telluride in the near future.
Please see the below for more information about the first lecture:

Telluride Institute and Dr. Jason Box of the Byrd Polar Research Center
Presented - The Greenland Ice Sheet: Beyond the Threshold of Viability, Thursday, September 4th, 7pm Sheridan Opera House
This Event was Free and Open to the Public!

Telluride Institute hosted Dr. Jason Box in Telluride from Sept. 1-8. Jason is a Climatologist at the
Byrd Polar Research Center in Columbus, OH. He has made 17 Greenland ice sheet climate research expeditions since 1994. His current research focuses primarily on analyzing the sensitivity of the Greenland ice sheet to climate using a combination of streaming, real-time meteorological data, computer models, satellite imagery, and remote time-lapse cameras that 'watch' the ice sheet's largest outlet glaciers. Jason is a contributing author to the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report and has led the last four annual State of the Climate reports on Greenland.

His stunning presentation includes never-before-seen imagery that graphically illustrates Greenland's spectacular inland melt lakes, moulins, glaciers, and fjords in a changing climate. Threaded throughout with current and cutting edge science, Jason discusses implications for global sea level, global commerce and transport, traditional Greenlandic culture and language, international politics and even local economic impacts.

Jason has recently been interviewed and filmed by internationally renowned media such as 60 Minutes, CBS News, NBC's Today Show, The Discovery Channel and The New York Times, as well as many international media outlets. To learn more about Jason and his work, look at his website and his blog

jbox_moulin_name_webThis was a unique opportunity for the Telluride community. The Opera House was filled to over-flowing for this  amazing and educational event! We hope to have Jason visit Telluride again in the near future, so stay tuned to what's happening at Telluride Institute.
