Regional Short Stories

Lori Lundquist
First up for this Saturday morning was Lori Lundquist who was a facilitator, teacher and all around go-getter involved with the DEEP CREEK School and it's existence from 1992 till 1998. A school about which Pamela Zoline has long championed as THE torch-bearer of the arts current and potential in the San Miguel area.
Lori began by giving an overview of Deep Creeks mandate to bring a diverse set of artists from around the country (and a few times from Telluride and the surrounding region) to live and make art on Deep Creek's idyllic 60 acres and the creek runs through it setting.
To get artists out of their studios and in touch with nature.
And to teach them more about the three precepts of  DEEP CREEK.
Focus on Ecology, Technology and the Body.
With Dan Collins, Lori helped establish DEEP CREEK as a "point of presence" and stocked it with teachers of diverse fields.
Located just fifteen minutes down the road from the town of Telluride. Deep Creek has it's own printmaking studio and has had classes on alternative dwellings and fabric sculpture.
Artists have also made sight specific.  For example, one student built an astro-chair with sights that locate bodies in the night sky.
One student weaved an entire on-site field of tall weeds into braids.
The five week workshops included instruction from teachers from around the country, herb walks and full on living in tents site immersion.
These five weeks all led up to a final night of performance and a walk from installation to installation which the community was invited and encouraged to attend.
An open house in which visitors were invited to arrive just after dark, watch performances developed by the individual artists and then wander along the creek or up and about stumbling upon the mysterious artifacts created by the visiting artists.
The Deep Creek School is now in the process of  transforming itself into Deep Creek Arts
