T.I. and the Town of Telluride joined forces again for the annual BBAW Sept 15th through 19th. The week of Black Bear Awareness was filled with three puppet shows for children on Monday, Tuesday , and Wednesday Sept 15th, 16th & 17th, featuring the relevant "Get Outta my hair, Ski area bear." Tuesday featured the Mountain-film "Papa Bear" at the Nugget. Wednesday was the annual bear parade. Thursday was the well-attended Bear Forum which drew representatives from the Telluride Marshal's Department, Waste Management, Telluride Town Council, Telluride Ecology Commission, and various property management representatives. BBAW concluded with a presence at the Telluride Farmers' Market.
Each year the Telluride Institute collaborates with the Town of Telluride to provide an intense week of black bear education during the summer. Telluride has been lauded by local waste management organizations as the only community in this region to actively address bear issues and educate our citizen about the bear human interface. They say the results are astounding, the emergency calls and citations in Telluride are minimal compared to our neighbors.
For those of you who have a bear story and would like to share, please send us an email or a letter including any photos and details of your encounter. We are collecting these for publication on our website. We are interested in where and when it happened, has the same bear returned and what have you done to prevent it from returning?
