A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR: FUNGI PERFECTI

At Fungi Perfecti, LLC—makers of Host Defense® Mushrooms™—we know just how impactful the Telluride Mushroom Festival can be on the world of mycology. That’s why we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to proudly be a Founder’s Sponsor at its 45th installment. This is a full-circle moment for us. Our founder, Paul Stamets, co-created this festival back in 1980—the same year he opened the doors of our company. As industry pioneers in the production of organic mushroom mycelium and mycelium-focused products, we’ve poured our resources into fungal research, becoming leaders in the field of mycology. And like the Telluride Mushroom Festival, we’ve used our platform to demonstrate the enormous potential of mushrooms to support the health and wellness of people and planet.*

Paul recounts the early days of the festival, and why it was important to him to be a co-founder: “We started in Gothic, Colorado and then moved to Telluride, with the encouragement of Art Goodtimes. The conference was inspired by the fact that there was much misinformation and politization against mushrooms and psilocybin mushrooms in particular. I am amazed by the spark that this conference has created, in enlightening the minds of – now – several generations. Truly mycelial momentum! And yet, there is so much more to be discovered by those who become be mushroomed!”

FUNGI PERFECTI: FOUNDED FOR A PURPOSE

Paul founded Fungi Perfecti in 1980 as a means to fund his ongoing research into the use and efficacy of mushroom mycelium to support both human and planetary health. Paul believed that mushroom mycelium is not only beneficial to the health of humans and planet, but essential. Through the inception of Fungi Perfecti, he set out to prove it. His goal? To bridge the divide between people and fungi. Since that time, Paul has become a world-renowned mycological expert.*

His central premise is that mushrooms are vital to a healthy immune response in both people and habitats. Just like people, habitats have immune systems. And immune systems become weakened due to stress, disease, and exhaustion. Mushrooms are the cellular bridges to healthy ecosystems in the habitats where they grow. At Fungi Perfecti, we’ve found that when harnessed in the form of mushroom mycelium-based supplements, they support human health as well.*

At its inception, Fungi Perfecti was a mushroom cultivation company focused on reinvesting its earned resources into mycological research. Informed by the remarkable discoveries we’ve made about the health-supporting properties that mushroom mycelium has for humans, our company evolved and expanded into the production and distribution of mushroom mycelium-based supplements. This pioneering line of health supplements was the foundation on which we built the Host Defense brand.*

HOST DEFENSE: BRIDGING THE DIVIDE

Armed with the knowledge of mushroom mycelium’s benefits for human health, Paul founded Host Defense Mushrooms. He realized that the next step in building a bridge between people and fungi was to share his discovery of the benefits of mushroom mycelium-based health supplements with others. Informed by decades of research, we’re proud to support Paul’s vision by making products available that support natural immunity and whole-body wellness. Based near the Olympic Rainforest in Washington state, we’ve become one of the best-documented and longest-standing mushroom supplement companies in the U.S.*

The more we’ve learned about mushroom mycelium, the more assured we’ve become of its enormous potential to support the health of both people and planet. It’s the reason the Host Defense brand exists and the fulfillment of a vision decades in the making.*

Mycelium is the longest-living part of the mushroom organism and consists of highly active cells that serve many important functions—including acting as the immune response of the fungal organism. Years of industry-based research, along with both internal and third-party testing, demonstrate that mycelium-based mushroom supplements offer significant immunological support. That’s why we use mushroom mycelium in ALL of our supplements—because it works!*

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT: PAUL’S WORK CONTINUES

Paul’s initial dream was to use Fungi Perfecti’s resources to support research. Since then, Fungi Perfecti has become synonymous with cutting-edge mycological research and innovative mycological solutions. As we embark on each new research study, Paul sets the direction of our efforts, guiding our Research & Development team toward discoveries that inform our products, and the field of mycology at large.*

Under Paul’s guidance, our Research & Development team continues to bridge the divide between people and fungi. Our strong commitment to research and innovation is one of the fundamental building blocks of both the Fungi Perfecti and Host Defense brands. It’s what continues to set us apart as leaders in the industry.*

In addition to Paul’s expertise, our Research & Development team consists of eight scientists—including four PhDs—with expertise ranging from mycology, chemistry, and environmental sciences to cellular and molecular biology. Our team regularly presents their innovative research at scientific conferences and has published 39 peer-reviewed journal articles to date. In addition to holding dozens of patents on scientific applications, Paul has authored 8 books on mycology, has co-authored 36 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and has submitted numerous magazine publications. His latest book, Psilocybin Mushrooms in Their Natural Habitats, was published on June 10, 2025.

Beyond research involving our Host Defense products, our efforts cover a broad range of important initiatives, including mycofiltration, mycoremediation, and support for bee populations. Our Research & Development team is committed to seeking out new and innovative ways to utilize the immune-supporting benefits of mushrooms and mushroom mycelium. Our continued mission is to explore, study, preserve, and spread knowledge about the use of fungi for helping people and planet.*
