SATURDAY 7/20 Arrival Night

Introductions, welcome address by Dr. Doty, dinner & orientation, quick introductions to faculty with overview of faculty background & expertise

SUNDAY – DAY 1 – 7/21 – COMPASSION RESEARCH & CULTIVATION TRAINING DAY 1 

8:30am – 9:00am – Compassion Practice

9:00am – 10:15am Morning Session 1 (75 minutes): Conceptual Background Overview (Panel: Dr. Doty, Emiliana, Cliff, Daryl)
* What is compassion? Scientific Perspectives: definitions, theory, conceptual view
* Distinguish from Empathy
* Bird’s Eye Overview of the literature on compassion & empathy

15 minute break

10:30am – 11:45: Morning Session 2 (75 minutes): Social, Clinical, Health & Developmental Perspectives on Compassion  (Panel: Daryl, Stephanie, Yotam, Emma)
* Social contexts/appraisals/attributions/attitudes that relate to/influence compassion
* Clinical perspectives on compassion (personality, disorders) –
* Health perspectives on compassion (recovery from disease, longevity)
* Developmental perspectives on compassion (social connection) 

11:45-noon – Compassion Practice

LUNCH  (noon to 1pm) – group process: get to know each other

1pm-2:15pm Afternoon Session 1: Neuroscience & Cognitive Perspectives on Compassion  (Panel: Emiliana, Cliff, Gaelle, Stephanie) 
* Neuroscience and Psychophysiological perspectives on compassion: biological underpinnings/correlates of compassion (brain, peripheral physiology, genes, HPA axis, oxytocin?)
* Interactive demonstrations where/when possible
(e.g. portable EEG? computer-based tasks? economic game)
* Cognitive systems that influence/are influenced by compassion (e.g. emotion recognition,
attention, behavior etc..)

15 minute break

2:30pm – 3:45pm Afternoon Session 2: Afternoon Compassion Cultivation
Overview (110 minutes): CCT & CBCT (Panel: Dr. Doty, Margaret, Brooke & Tim)
* What is compassion: Practitioner Perspective
* Overview & practice of cultivation of compassion

3:45 – 4:45pm: Walk, hike with discussion about compassion research ideas

4:45pm – 5:45pm: Researching Compassion
Participants with protocol ideas briefly present the idea. Participant breakouts are then formed based on
their individual or group interests guided by relevant faculty in different methodologies – the sessions will develop ideas from each group about a study protocol to flesh out in full detail over the next 2 days for presentation.

5:45pm: Compassion Practice Session (15 minutes)

6pm DINNER – Designated faculty member will synthesize days events, highlighting questions of interest followed by a discussion

7pm Participant project design time individually or in groups

MONDAY – DAY 2- 7/22 COMPASSION RESEARCH & CULTIVATION TRAINING DAY 2 

8:30am – 9:00am – Compassion Practice

9:00am – 10:15am Morning Session: Measuring Compassion (Panel: Daryl, Cliff, Emiliana, Gaelle, Richie, Stephanie)
* Review of current methods for measuring/evaluating compassion – Day 3 morning (brain (EEG, fMRI), peripheral physiology, genetic measures, saliva/HPA axis, immune measures, blood measures; behavioral measures: computerized, prosocial behavior)
* Protocol design analysis best practices/standards: ideal control conditions , longitudinal measures
* Practical approaches to enhancing/training compassion
* New advances in compassion measures

15 minute break

10:30am Morning Session: Compassion Interventions (Gaelle, Richie, Stephanie, Cliff)
* Generation of compassion in an experimental context
* Applying compassion interventions empirically
* New Advances in Compassion Interventions
* Discussion: Other ways of fostering compassion other than
current protocols and meditation.

11:45-noon – Compassion Practice

LUNCH noon – 1pm

Afternoon Session 1: Compassion Cultivation Overview (120 minutes): CFT & Self-Compassion (Yotam, ?)

15 minute break

Afternoon Session 2: Participant breakouts to finalize their design and meet with faculty around relevant methods.

3:45 – 4:45pm: Walk, hike with discussion about compassion research ideas

4:45pm – 5:45pm: Group project design with faculty office hours

6pm DINNER – Designated faculty member will synthesize days events, highlighting questions of interest followed by a discussion

After dinner – participants keep meeting about projects

TUESDAY – DAY 3 – 7/23 COMPASSION RESEARCH & CULTIVATION TRAINING DAY 3 

8:30am – 9:00am – Compassion Practice
9:00am – 10:15am Morning Session:
Funding & Successful Grant-Writing for Compassion Research (Richie, Brooke, Cliff, Stephanie)
* Areas of need in compassion research (e.g. healthcare, education)
* Who is funding? How do we get this funded?
* Successfully funded PI’s to present: Cliff, Richie…
* Invite Templeton or other Grant representatives to talk about funding?
* What is the best way to successfully frame compassion-based protocols?
* What do the best protocols include/look like?

10:30am Morning Session: The Future of Compassion Research (Richie, Cliff, Dr. Doty, Emiliana)

Guest lectures by two senior investigators: Kocha and Allison

11:45 – noon – Compassion Practice

WEDNESDAY – DAY 4 – 7/24 – PROTOCOL PRESENTATION DAY

Protocol development in teams with faculty consultation/input. 

8:30am – 9:00am – Compassion Practice

9:00am – noon Morning: Presentations by Participants with Q & A’s, Discussion & Feedback

12pm Lunch
